Error reference
Every error has the same shape. None of them includes your prompt or your response.
{"error": {"code": "insufficient_credits",
"type": "insufficient_quota",
"message": "Insufficient credits. Top up at …/panel"}}| Code | What it means | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| 401 | The key is not valid: it does not exist, it was revoked, or it belongs to another environment. | Check you copied the whole key and have not revoked it in the panel. |
| 402 | You are out of credit, or this key has reached one of its caps. | Read `error.code`: `insufficient_credits` needs a top-up, `workspace_budget_exceeded` is the monthly budget of the whole workspace, `client_budget_exceeded` is one project's — one of your own customers' — cap, `client_tag_budget_exceeded` is the cap of the end client whose tag the call carried (`error.client` names it), `key_budget_exceeded` needs that key's monthly cap raised, and `key_daily_budget_exceeded` clears itself at midnight. None of them called the provider, so nothing was charged. Service resumes in under a minute. |
| 409 | A comparison's estimate is above the budget you gave it. | `error.code` is `budget_exceeded` and the message carries the estimate. Raise `max_budget_cents` or send fewer examples; nothing ran and nothing was billed. |
| 413 | The request body is over 1 MB (25 MB for audio). | Split the text or trim the conversation history. |
| 429 | You went over that key's requests-per-minute limit. | Wait for what the Retry-After header says. If it happens often, write to us and we will raise it. |
| 5xx | The model did not answer. | You are not charged. If the alias has an alternative provider configured, we try there automatically. |
